Nutrition and Detox Diet
The importance of proper nutrition in healing—and maintaining health—cannot be overstated enough in discussing the healing process in general and specifically while working with Plant Medicines. There is a proverb in Ayurvedic medicine, highlighting this importance: “When diet is wrong, medicine is of no use; when diet is correct, medicine is of no need.” This ancient proverb emphasizes the reality that the majority of physical and emotional illnesses can be directly related to two factors—toxicity and deficiency.
The human organism is a remarkable creation designed to heal itself, given the proper functioning of organs and adequate absorption of nutrients. Detoxification is necessary because the common consumption of junk food, drugs, alcohol, or other toxic substances so prevalent in our modern world, all impair and interfere with the body’s ability to effectively digest, process, and assimilate nutrition and plant medicines. Our 10-day plant medicine diet focuses on detoxification, helping to restore homeostasis and stimulate our bodies natural ability to heal itself.
At Pisatahua we follow a traditional ayahuasca diet, as practiced by our healers and their ancestors. For our 10-day diets, guests are provided fresh organic food from the amazon upon arrival. On the second day, we provide an offering to Pachamana (Mother-Earth) and initiate the process of la Dieta.
For the next 8-days participants will engage in a shamanic diet to detox the body and purify the mind. The diet avoids any strong flavors and is focused on three grains: quinoa, whole-grain wheat and whole oats. Some local fish and/or eggs may also be provided. Additionally, guests will be provided an edible clay earth called Phasa which helps alleviate digestive problems, gastritis, ulcers and cleans the liver.
During the diet the use of soap, shampoos, toothpastes, perfumes and oils are prohibited. We provide guests a clay called Qhollpa to use as a natural and non-toxic replacement for soaps and shampoos. Qhollpa is odorless and extremely effective and cleaning the body, while strengthening/regenerating hair. Since no sugar or strong flavors are consumed, guests can efficiently clean their teeth using a toothbrush without toothpaste; or they can use Phasa.
Each guests is prescribed a particular plant medicine to diet for the duration of the retreat. The specific plant depends on the needs of the guests and will be determined upon arrival in consultation with the healer. The specific plant-medicine is given to participants following all meals and ceremonies.
We recommend guests follow the ayahuasca preperation diet for a minimum of 5 days prior to arrival. Please inform us if you have any food allergies or special dietary restrictions. We can accommodate most any need.
